Milwaukee Brewers DH Christian Yelich will miss his fourth consecutive game Saturday in Pittsburgh as he continues to deal with back soreness. Given Pat Murphy’s previous response, vaguely positive but noncommittal on Yelich’s status, and the fact that the Brewers play an early game tomorrow, seeing Yelich out of the lineup once again is not a surprise. Today’s update did, at least, bring another tempered note of promise regarding his return.
Yelich takes further step in right direction, Brewers continue cautious approach
It’s not the news fans were looking for – Yelich was projected to come back over the weekend – but, Murphy said, Yelich will be out there taking practice hacks on Saturday. It’s something, and it’s not a setback.
Compared to two weeks ago, the Brewers are much better equipped to handle his absence. After going 6-9 in his first two games back, Jackson Chourio has gone hitless in September but just having him in the lineup is massive.
Jake Bauers, who delivered the go-ahead blow in Friday’s 5-2 win, is back as well as a reinforcement. He’s in the order again, batting fifth, with Pirates right-hander Mitch Keller on the mound this evening.

Certainly the Brewers want Yelich back as soon as possible, but they have no shortage of contributors. Brice Turang, in particular, is the power hitter no one saw coming. Top 5-6 in WAR among NL position players, he has a legitimate case for a spot on the MVP ballot.
The offense will also get a boost if/when Andrew Vaughn digs his way out of an extended slump.
The main concern with Yelich is whether the injury lingers or becomes aggravated. Murphy revealed that Yelich actually hurt himself back on August 27 against Arizona. He then played through multiple games before being scratched from the lineup earlier this week. He hasn’t returned since, but hopefully that just reflects caution. Everything Murphy has said so far suggests that it is indeed a fairly minor issue, though one crucial to avoid exacerbating.
Yelich still has a chance to make good on those earlier projections by playing tomorrow, but, barring a scary update, it won’t be the end of the world if he doesn’t.
