In 2018, former NFL MVP, Shaun Alexander started the Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year Award. Earlier this week, the finalists for the award were named. Among those named were Wisconsin standout, Braelon Allen. Allen is joined by Georgia TE Brock Bowers, Ohio State QB CJ Stroud, Ohio State RB TreVeyon Henderson and Texas WR Xavier Worthy.
The Field
Braelon Allen – Wisconsin RB
Wisconsin fans heard it all season long, “He’s only 17 years old.” Technically, Allen should be a senior in high school but he reclassified to the class of 2021. He came to Wisconsin with the plan to play safety or linebacker. He found a home in the backfield towards the end of the season. Allen had 157 attempts for 1,109 yards for an average 7.1 per carry and 12 touchdowns. Allen will look to continue a long standing tradition of elite running backs playing at Wisconsin.
Brock Bowers – Georgia TE
Georgia’s receiving corps was decimated by injuries but Bowers stepped up and was a consistent offensive player. Bowers had 47 receptions for 791 yards and 11 touchdowns.
CJ Stroud – Ohio State QB
Ohio State quarterback, CJ Stroud a Heisman finalist, will look to add to his award resume. Stroud completed 280 passes on 395 attempts for 3,862 yards, 38 touchdowns and 5 interceptions for a 70.9% completion percentage.
TreVeyon Henderson – Ohio State RB
Henderson joins fellow teammate CJ Stroud as a finalist as well. In 12 games, Henderson rushed 167 times for 1,172 yards and 15 touchdowns. He added 23 receptions for 285 yards and 4 additional touchdowns.
Xavier Worthy – Texas WR
Texas struggled this season but Worthy was the lone bright spot. He grabbed 62 catches for 981 yards and 12 touchdowns. Worthy and Steve Sarkisian will look to build on the momentum they gained the last 5 weeks of the season where the Longhorns finished 4-1. Expect the Longhorns to have high expectations in 2022.
Winner Announcement
The winner of the Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year award will be announced on January 10th, 2022. Let’s hope Braelon Allen can bring some hardware back to Madison!
