Much of the Packers’ offense funnels through explosive running back, and former rushing champion, Josh Jacobs, but it remains an open question how the rest of the backfield will shape up in 2025.
As general manager Brian Gutekunst and the Packers work towards trimming the roster to the initial 53 ahead of Week 1 against the Detroit Lions, we know one player who won’t be sharing a backfield with Jacobs and quarterback Jordan Love.
According to multiple reports, the Packers have released rookie running back Amar Johnson.
Why Packers Releasing Amar Johnson is Surprising

Green Bay lacks quality proven depth behind Jacobs, but that isn’t the only reason moving on from Johnson was a bit surprising.
Former Packers third-round draft choice Marshawn Lloyd continues to battle through injuries, and with only Emanuel Wilson entrenched as the No. 2 running back, Johnson would have provided some quality depth after his strong performance in the preseason.
Johnson logged 22 carries for 115 yards and a pair of touchdowns, which could make it difficult for him to slip through waivers which would give Green Bay the chance to add him to the practice squad.
“I feel like it was a great opportunity to come here and showcase my talent,” Johnson told reporters after the Packers’ preseason finale. “I always felt like the love was from them from pro day. Definitely a place I want to be at.”
A violent downhill runner, Johnson the only way Johnson will be back in Green bay, it seems, is as a member of the Packers’ practice squad.
