The Packers have been plagued with injuries this year, but things are looking up. Three of the most key injuries were to Jaire Alexander, David Bakhtiari and Za’Darius Smith. Jaire Alexander has been practicing and Matt LaFleur said he hopes Bakhtiari will begin to practice soon. However, fans haven’t heard much about Za’Darius Smith. He was rehabbing away from the facility, but has rejoined the team. He posted on social media giving some hope of a potential return.
What it Means
Za’Darius Smith was arguably the Packers best defensive player for the last two years. Smith has 26 sacks in the last two seasons, but hasn’t played since week one. His return could take the defense to new levels. The Packers defense has played good this year considering Smith hasn’t taken the field. People may have forgotten the impact Smith can have on a game. However it looks like he’s ready to remind everybody on the biggest stage. He ended his post with “#playoffs” indicating he’s ready to lead the defense to a Super Bowl.
His return would add another talented body to the pass rush. Preston Smith and Rashan Gary are both having great years in the absence of Za’Darius Smith. Potentially adding arguably the best pass rusher of the three back into the mix would change the defense in the best way.
