Rowdy Tellez and Team Mexico are the winners of Pool C and are advancing to the quarterfinals in the 2023 World Baseball Classic.
Despite Team USA being the Pool C favorites, Mexico managed to beat them by a score of 11-5. Mexico also beat Great Britain 2-1 and Canada as previously mentioned. Their lone loss came during their opening match up against Colombia in which Rowdy Tellez’s teammate Luis Urias was charged with a brutal error in the 10th inning.
Throughout pool play, Rowdy Tellez, Randy Arozarena, and Joey Meneses played big roles offensively. Tellez finished with a .353/.421/.588 slash line that included one home run and five RBI. Arozareana had a .500 average with a 1.703 OPS and Meneses a 1.263 OPS. These three players accounted for 20 RBI over four games.
Mexico also has great pitching that includes players such as Julio Urias, Tajuan Walker, Jose Urquidy, and Giovanny Gallegos. This will make them a tough team to compete against going forward.
Looking ahead to the quarterfinals, Mexico will likely play the winner of tonight’s Dominican Republic vs Puerto Rico game.
