Lately, it seems like everything is going wrong for the Brewers. The loss of Lorenzo Cain took a blow to the offense, the starting pitchers aren’t making enough quality starts, and the list could go on. Here are two takeaways from last night’s loss. The Brewers didn’t get no-hit and Justin Smoak could be finding his stroke. Tonight’s matchup consists of Brandon Woodruff for the Brewers and Alec Mills for the Cubs.
Mills, Cubs look to stay hot
Statistically, the Cubs are the best team in baseball. With a 13-3 record, the Cubs have an explosive offense with a mix of young and old talent, along with gems in their starting rotation. Alec Mills is one of those. He is 2-0 on the year with a 1.38 ERA in 13 innings pitched. In his last two starts, Mills has given up five hits. This isn’t great news for the struggling Brewers’ offense. Mills is primarily a fastball pitcher with a ground ball rate at 54.3 percent. Tonight is the first day of school for Mills and the Brewers. Brock Holt is the only member of the Brewers who has faced Mills.
Ace Woodruff
On his fifth go-around, Woodruff is looking for his second win of the season. In 21 ⅓ innings pitched, Woodruff has averaged fewer than one hit or walk per inning. For everyone keeping track at home, that’s a 0.98 WHIP. With 26 strikeouts on the year, Woodruff’s bread and butter is his high-heat fastball. He looks to flip the script of giving up runs in the first inning tonight.
