Statistically-speaking, you might have a hard time calling Marcedes Lewis a “great player” in his five seasons with Green Bay. In 79 games with the team from 2018-22, he has 57 catches for 582 yards and six TDs. Not exactly the numbers of legends.
However, Lewis is one of those players whose value goes well beyond the numbers. He’s a tremendous blocker, a well-respected locker-room guy, and a trusted sidekick of Number 12.
At age 38, Lewis quietly continues to make plays that help the team. In Sunday’s game versus Miami, Lewis caught two passes for 32 yards. One was a TD in the first quarter on a two-yard pass from Aaron Rodgers. The other was a 31-yard toss from Rodgers in the third quarter when the Pack was driving for a tying TD.
Marcedes Lewis TD vs. Miami was historic
The one-yard TD reception, his second TD of the 2022 campaign, was noteworthy for a couple of reasons:
- At age 38, Lewis became the 11th player in NFL history to have multiple TDs in a career at age 38 or older.
- He became the first Packers player ever to score two or more TDs after the age of 38.
- At age 38-220 days, his TD versus Miami made him the second oldest Packer to score a TD, topped by only Zeke Bratkowski who scored a TD for the Pack at age 39-355 days. Lewis is also the third oldest Packer to score a TD; his TD reception in London against the N.Y. Giants came at age 38-143 days.
The 28th pick of the Jacksonville Jaguars in the 2006 draft, Lewis, from UCLA, is playing in his 17th NFL season. He has 39 career TDs, six with the Packers. Half of his six TDs with the Pack have been one-yard scoring passes from Aaron Rodgers.
Marcedes Lewis is the oldest player to score a TD in NFL this season
For the record, Lewis is also the only player age 38+ to score touchdowns in the NFL this season.
Will Lewis get a chance to break the Packers record for the oldest TD? To do so, he would have to play in not only 2023 for the Packers, but he wouldn’t pass Zeke Bratkowski’s TD-setting record age of 39-355 days until early in the 2024 season.
