John Tonje has been tearing up the basketball net for the Wisconsin Badgers and that is enough for him to get noticed nationally as he was named among the Top 50 Division I players in the country so far.

The senior guard is among the players cited by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association to be named on the 2024-25 Oscar Robertson Trophy Midseason Watch List.
Other notable names on the list are Cooper Flagg of Duke Blue Devils, Kam Jones of state rivals Marquette Golden Eagles, super rookies Ace Bailey and Dylan Harper of Rutgers Scarlet Knights, and Villanova Wildcats’ Eric Dixon who currently leads everyone in Division I in scoring.
This is Tonje’s first national honor in his career.

He has been on a tear lately, scoring more than 20 points in all of his last four games after going blank in their win against the USC Trojans.
His coach Greg Gard is happy for the citation saying “I’m happy for John because he’s been a delight to coach.”
John Tonje’s growing leadership
Tonje’s scoring is given but his leadership skills this season just continuously grow.
On the court, he is not afraid to take the most important shots, something that happened in their win against Northwestern. He hit the lead-extending free throws with 19.3 seconds to give his team comfort.
He also knows how and when to praise his teammates.

Carter Gilmore was the star of the night against Northwestern and Tonje was all praises for him, calling him one of the best teammates he’s had.
“I know how hard he works. He’ll do anything for his teammates,” graduate guard John Tonje said. “He’s one of the best teammates I’ve ever had in my life. He’s lives and breathes and bleeds Wisconsin basketball. He’ll do anything he can for this team.”
