The Wisconsin football staff confirmed early today that a successful freshman has suffered a tough injury recently during practice.
Former four-star outside linebacker Thomas Heiberger has reportedly suffered a knee injury, according to his position coach Matt Mitchell. Mitchell believes that Heiberger will not be out for the season and still believes that the linebacker will return at some point. However, there is no real timetable for his return, and Mitchell could not give a clear answer regarding just how severe the injury might be.
Wisconsin Football Outside Linebacker Thomas Heiberger Goes Down With a Knee Injury
The Wisconsin football staff announced an unfortunate bit of news today as former four-star outside linebacker Thomas Heiberger has gone down with an injury. Heiberger, a recent signee for Wisconsin and a current first-year player, suffered an undisclosed knee injury during a recent practice which has sidelined him.
Outside Linebackers and Special Teams Coach Matt Mitchell revealed that Heiberger indeed suffered a knee injury, but will not miss the season. Mitchell also stated that there is not a current timetable for the return of the linebacker. The outside linebacker and Mitchell both have not revealed what the injury is, and could be searching for more opinions before committing to a recovery plan.
Matt Mitchell Optimistic Heiberger Returns for the Wisconsin Badgers Football Team this Season
While Mitchell announced Heiberger is injured with some sort of knee issue, the position coach also added that he and the rest of the staff do not believe this to be a season-ending injury. Perhaps the best news Wisconsin could have received regarding the injury is the lack of any major severity, which means the young linebacker could return this season.
While he could potentially return this season, it is more of an idea to be optimistic about rather than a truth at this point in time. Mitchell noted he is ‘optimistic’ that Heiberger returns, but would not commit to any real timetable regarding his return. Heiberger was in position to find serious playing time early on this season, which could still hold true for the linebacker when he returns.
Can Heiberger Crack the Starting Lineup Upon Returning to Play?
Before his injury, Mitchell believed that Heiberger could have carved out a spot for himself on the field given his play in practice. Upon delivering the news to the media, Mitchell was visibly upset and it was clear that the Wisconsin football staff had plans to use the young outside linebacker.
The good news, however, is that Heiberger is not expected to miss the entire season which means the linebacker should hit the field for the Badgers. It is still early for the staff as the injury just recently occurred, so a return-to-play plan has not been created yet. However, it seems as though Wisconsin plans on having Heiberger return as soon as he is medically able to.
What will be truly interesting is what time in the season Heiberger returns, and when he does, how much he ends up playing. The Wisconsin football staff could be considering placing a redshirt on the linebacker if they feel he will not be able to play much.
