The Wisconsin football staff has been showing plenty of love to a talented wide receiver with blazing speed recently as he continues to impress.
Tanner Montano, a 2026 wide receiver from La Cueva High School in Albuquerque, New Mexico, has quickly become a recruiting target for Wisconsin. Montano is an accomplished football player, but also a deadly track and field runner with a personal best of 10.64-seconds in the 100-meter sprint. Recently, the receiver sat down with the Wisconsin Sports Heroics staff to speak about what he is looking at when entering the college recruiting experience.
Wisconsin Football Staff Intrigued by New Mexico Native Wide Receiver Tanner Montano
It did not take the Wisconsin Badgers football staff long to find another gem of a player in the desert as a new prospect has emerged. New Mexico native and blazing fast wide receiver Tanner Montano has recently been receiving plenty of love from the Wisconsin football staff, and rightfully so given the All-State season the receiver had last year.
Montano is relatively new to the recruiting world after a slow freshman year that resulted in one reception for a 44-yard gain. This past season, however, the receiver took a major step forward and became a pivotal part of the offense for his team. Montano recorded 41 receptions for 891 yards and eight touchdowns, including a 97-yard breakaway play as well for his longest play of the season.
The wide receiver was not limited to just catching the ball either as Montano began experimenting with rushing the ball. Montano recorded two scores on the ground along with just two rushing yards but offered a very speedy look out of the backfield. Montano regularly beat his opposing defenders over the top for big gains as he showcased just how dangerous his speed can be.
The accomplished athlete has not been very active with college coaches and college recruiting as the process is new to him. However, both Wisconsin and the University of New Mexico have been in close contact with the receiver. New Mexico has kept the closest relationship to Montano early on, but the wide receiver is still unsure of what he is looking for in a potential collegiate home.
What can Montano Add to the Wisconsin Badgers Football Team?
While Montano is known for his speed and his ability to attack the defense over the top, the receiver is more than capable of doing more for his team. Montano believes that his speed opens up other opportunities for both himself and his teammates as defenses are worried about what he can do in one play. The receiver stated, “My speed is definitely what sets me apart. My speed and deep threat ability are a huge threat themselves but it also opens up the rest of my game because defenses are so worried.”
The game-changing speed that Montano possesses is accompanied with a great route running ability and excellent footwork. Montano can get open using more than just his speed, and that is a talent the receiver is working to continue to develop as well. The receiver is still learning the technical aspects of the position, but as he continues to learn and relay his knowledge on the field, he will certainly continue to get better.
Within the Wisconsin football offense, Montano can offer a different level of speed and agility that the team would love. The Wisconsin staff loves athletes, meaning players who are versatile and able to dominate with different aspects of their play. Montano is just that kind of receiver due to his speed and ability to utilize more than just his speed to beat the defense.
The recruiting process is still very new to Montano, meaning he does not really know where the programs who have contacted him rank as of now. However, the recruit has enjoyed maintaining contact with the various coaches and staff members who have reached out early on. If Wisconsin hopes to land Montano in the distant future, they will need to keep a tight relationship with the accomplished wide receiver.
