The Wisconsin football staff has decided to give a versatile running back a shot at playing wide receiver during camp.
Nate White, a running back known for his hands and ability to receive out of the backfield, has been taking reps as a receiver for the Wisconsin football team. With depth at running back, Wisconsin feels that White could become a versatile receiver used during specific situations. Along with White takings reps at wide receiver, another wide receiver, Trech Kekahuna, has been named the return specialist for the team this upcoming season.
Wisconsin Football Staff Giving Running Back Nate White a Chance at Receiver
The Wisconsin football staff has been open to moving players around position wise according to what they are the best at. In the case of running back Nate White, Wisconsin is testing White out at receiver during fall camp and allow him to potentially flourish.
White, a Milwaukee native, was recruited to the Wisconsin football program as a four-star running back but had experience playing different positions. The recruit played quarterback during his Junior year and rushed for 22 touchdowns in a wildcat offense due to not having other quarterback options. White can run screens, options, bubbles, and any real trick play that Wisconsin can think up.
However, his versatility extends beyond playing running back and quarterback as Wisconsin feels he can potentially play receiver. While White is getting reps at wide receiver, he has not real technical training as a receiver and will still need to refine the technical side of his game.
Will the Wisconsin Badgers Football Staff Fully Convert White to a Receiver?
For White, a full conversion over to a receiver is possible and likely, but it is also still far too early to truly tell. White has great receiving instincts and ability as a running back, but it will be interesting to see what he can do at the position. Wide Receivers Coach Kenny Guiton stated that he is ‘excited’ to get his ‘hands’ on White during camp.
Guiton also stated that he is not expecting White to come out of the gates swinging as a receiver, but rather is interested to see what White is capable of. Wisconsin threw to their running backs 54 times out of a possible 469 chances, which means that a running back in the Badgers offense is not necessarily guaranteed receptions.
The running back took a redshirt for last season after not making the field with plenty of depth in front of him. Heading into this season, Wisconsin has added four running backs to the roster, and could consider making White into a receiver if he succeeds in camp.
Redshirt Freshman Wide Receiver Trech Kekahuna Returning Punts During Upcoming Season
When asked after a recent practice where he took the main amount of reps as a returner, wide receiver Trech Kekahuna confirmed that he would be the return specialist for the Wisconsin football team. Kekahuna is incredibly agile and quick, with his most notable off-season highlight being a dunk he successfully performed in front of Offensive Coordinator Phil Longo.
Wisconsin had other possible options to return punts such as fellow receivers Tyrell Henry, CJ Williams, and Kyan Berry-Johnson. Berry-Johnson, a true Freshman, would have to have really impressed the staff to earn the role, but had a chance due to his blazing speed and field vision.
