It’s draft week for football fans! Hundreds of players over the course of three days will be drafted or selected as un-drafted free agents. It’s a crazy time for players, families, organizations, and fans. Wisconsin should be represented well this weekend. There are three players that should hear their name called over the course of the draft.
Keeanu Benton
Keeanu Benton was one of the best nose tackles to come out of Wisconsin in a long time. He was a player opposing offenses had to prepare their game plan around. In four years at Wisconsin, Benton recorded nine sacks and 86 total tackles.
Over the course of his career, Benton was constantly double teamed. He was a lot to handle on the defensive line consistency over the course of his career.
Benton stood out at the Senior Bowl and quickly became one of the best defensive line prospects. This resulted in his draft stock rising a ton. I think Keeanu Benton is a day two lock and could go as high as the early second round.
Joe Tippmann
You never heard much about Joe Tippmann over his career as a two year starter as a center. Any time you don’t here an offensive lineman’s name, they’re doing their job.
I was a little surprised to see Tippmann leave early, but I can see why. He’s seen as one of better centers in the draft. His stock likely won’t go much higher. As a result, it makes sense why he declared early.
I can Tippmann as a day two pick as well. I see him going in the third round. He could also fall to the early fourth round, but that would be worst case scenario.
Nick Herbig
Nick Herbig is included in a long list of great edge rushers to come out of Wisconsin. You could see the potential right away his freshman year. He only got better and become dominant over his three year career.
Herbig ended his Badger career with 134 tackles, 21 sacks, and three forced fumbles. He was constantly in the backfield either blowing a play up or sacking the quarterback.
Unfortunately, Herbig could fall to the fourth or fifth round. Some scouts see Herbig as an under-sized pass rusher but has the skills you want in an edge rusher. It will be interesting to see where Nick Herbig lands. If he falls into a day three pick, one team is getting a steal.
