Following the opening of the 2026 recruiting period, the Wisconsin football staff extended a scholarship offer to a defensive lineman.

James Johnson, a 2026 defensive lineman from Florida, has racked up a handful of scholarship offers since the end of his season. Johnson currently holds offers from big programs such as Syracuse, Louisville, UCF, and South Carolina. During a recent interview with Wisconsin Sports Heroics, Johnson broke down where his recruitment currently sits.

Recently, the Wisconsin football staff extended a scholarship to 2026 defensive lineman James Johnson. Johnson, a Florida native, stands in at 6-feet-4-inches, and weighs roughly 280-pounds on the field. The defensive lineman is a physical player that has no issue dropping an offensive lineman on their backs.

So far, Johnson holds 11 total scholarships and has been heavily recruited early on by Syracuse and Louisville in particular. Johnson plans on attending more camps this summer, which could lead to more scholarship offers coming his way.

James Johnson: “I Look for if They Are a Good Program, and if They Have a Good Weight Room”

The recruitment of Johnson and his eventual commitment is all about what the program can do for him on the field. Johnson wants to be surrounded by a competitive environment and a program that wants to be successful and win.

When asked about what the defensive lineman looks for in a program, Johnson stated, “I look for if they are a good program, and if they have a good weight room and a good recovery facility.” In order to get the results on the field that Johnson wants, he needs to be able to recovery off the field and prepare himself for each game.

While it is still very early for both sides, the Wisconsin football staff is hoping to develop a close relationship moving forward with Johnson. Johnson has both the build and the play-style that the Wisconsin football staff looks for which will make it hard for the Badgers to look elsewhere.

At the moment, Johnson has been in close contact with other schools as the defensive lineman stated, “Syracuse, UCF, and Louisville have been the highest interest.” It is still early, but Johnson states that he has had “good” experiences visiting all three schools and enjoyed each program. The Syracuse Orange in particular have been close to Johnson, booking multiple visits and camp invites.
