Wisconsin football is in the middle of their second week of fall camp. With the season less than four weeks away, the Badgers are preparing for a 2024 season that will include a ton of tough games. This fall camp includes position battles and players potentially breaking out. Here are three early headlines so far in Wisconsin football fall camp.
Wisconsin Football Could Have Their Official Starting Quarterback
The Wisconsin football staff stated there would be a quarterback battle in fall camp. It would be between redshirt senior Tyler Van Dyke and redshirt sophomore Brayden Locke. Van Dyke is a transfer from Miami (FL) while Locke made three starts for the Badgers last season.
I never felt that this was going to be a big battle throughout camp, but the feeling after today’s practice was Van Dyke is closing in on the job. Media members at practice have stated that Van Dyke has looked good the last few days and appears to be settling in. I think it would have been an issue if Van Dyke did not win the job after transferring and using his last year of college eligibility. This felt like his job all along.
Wisconsin Football Looks to Have Another Stud Freshmen Running Back
I know this might surprise some fans, but Wisconsin football might have found another running back gem. In particular, freshman Darrion Dupree has been having a solid start to fall camp. Media members at practice have said his playmaking ability has been really good start.
At best, Dupree will be the third running back on the depth chart to begin the season, but there seems to be a legitimate opportunity for the true freshman to get meaningful snaps. With two seniors in Chez Mellusi and Tawee Walker getting most of the snaps, there is an opportunity for a young back to be the starter next year. Dupree has been the one that has impressed early and often.
The Defensive Line Depth and Talent Seems to be Much Better than Last Year
The depth of the defensive line was a legitimate concern coming into this season. As a result, Fickell attached the position in the transfer portal. There has been a defensive lineman that has stood out in just about every practice.
In particular, Brandon Lane, a get from the transfer portal, had a good day in practice today. It sounds like most of his work has been with the second team, but he has the ability to crack the rotation this year.
I am pretty confident in James Thompson Jr and Curt Neal locking down starting spots on the defensive line, but there are plenty of players who will fight for the final starting spot and the rotation. It’s been a great start for a player like Lane.
