Wisconsin football has lost over 20 players to the transfer portal this offseason. Wisconsin also parted ways with offensive coordinator Phil Longo near the tail end of the 2024 season, ending a two-year partnership. However, the Luke Fickell-led squad continues to bolster their program following a disappointing 5-7 season. On Thursday, they received good news regarding a player who entered the transfer portal in late December.
Defensive lineman Jamel Howard, a top prospect in the 2023 recruiting class, will withdraw his name from the transfer portal and return to Wisconsin football for the 2025 season. Howard was just one of a few transfers who did not commit to a school as the College Football Playoff championship game concluded earlier this week.
Jamel Howard Returns to Wisconsin Football
According to Chris Hummer of 247Sports:
Wisconsin redshirt freshman d-lineman Jamel Howard has withdrawn from the transfer portal, @mzenitz, and I have learned for @247Sports. He was one of the Badgers’ highest-rated signees in the 2023 class.
A three-star recruit in the 2023 class per 247Sports, defensive lineman Jamel Howard held offers from Wisconsin football, Michigan, Miami, LSU, Nebraska, Iowa State, and Central Michigan, among others. He eventually signed with the Wisconsin Badgers, becoming the fourth three-star recruit to sign with the Big Ten program during head coach Luke Fickell’s first year.
Howard did not see actions during his first year in Madison, Wisconsin, using his redshirt season. He did not play during the 2024 campaign. He recorded 53 tackles, eight TFLs, and three sacks as a senior at Marist High School in Chicago as a senior circa 2022.
Wisconsin Transfer Portal Update
Defensive lineman Jamel Howard’s withdrawal from the transfer portal is the first significant roster move since early January. In recent memory, Wisconsin football has not seen an entry into the portal, but running back Tawee Walker committed to the Cincinnati Bearcats in early January. More notably, Miami Hurricanes transfer cornerback D’Yoni Hill committed to Wisconsin on the same day. Hill has 89 tackles, two TFLs, 11 passes defended, and an interception across 34 career games.
