The Wisconsin football team have defeated the Western Michigan Broncos after the offense struggle to make it through the defense.
The Badgers offense drove 63-yards down the field using 15 plays but missed the potential leading field goal on their opening drive. Wisconsin needed 16 plays to score their first touchdown of the contest with a nine-yard rush by running back Chez Mellusi. Wisconsin was not able to break off anything major against the Broncos, but ultimately won the game despite their struggles.
Wisconsin Football Beats Western Michigan Broncos With Tough Running Game
The Wisconsin football team has walked off with a win over the Western Michigan Broncos in their season and home opener. The Badgers did not look pretty doing it, but they were able to take home the win after some luck. After entering the fourth quarter down 14-13 to the Broncos, Wisconsin managed to recover a punt that hit a Western Michigan player, ultimately serving as a 50-yard gain.
Wisconsin went on to score a touchdown with running back Tawee Walker pounding the ball in and reclaiming the lead of the game. The Wisconsin football team was briefly booed by their own fans before the punt after the offense again struggled to convert much of anything. The Badgers truly took what the defense gave them against the Broncos, but did it to a fault and did not play nearly aggressive enough against a MAC team.
The Wisconsin football team again seemed a step behind, which was an issue the team had last season. The Badgers staff and players failed to recognize a fake field goal, which eventually resulted in the Western Michigan Broncos taking the lead. Wisconsin can afford to make mistakes and win against solid teams, respectfully, but cannot do so against great teams like Alabama or Ohio State.
The Wisconsin defense played well overall, stopping Western Michigan from converting a few key third and fourth downs. Wisconsin did, however, still struggle to generate any pressure on the quarterback which was. major area of concern last season. Perhaps the most shocking thing to see during the game was the lack of pressure the Wisconsin football team generated.
What Did the Wisconsin Badgers Football Team do Right Against the Broncos?
What the Wisconsin football team was able to do right against the Western Michigan Broncos was hammer the football on the ground. Wisconsin used plenty of different looks out of the backfield, between two running back sets and inside hand-off option plays. The Badgers did not breakaway big plays against the Broncos, but displayed a conservative offense that can break down defenses.
The Broncos were simply not able to stop the run game of Wisconsin but rather could only contain the run game. Wisconsin averaged nearly five yards per rush against the Broncos and used small gains to move their way down the field. It was not flashy or extremely entertaining football, but it was the type of football that ultimately wins games.
Another thing the Wisconsin football team did correctly against the Western Michigan Broncos was take what the defense gave them. Last season, Wisconsin forced too many plays which resulted in both incompletions and costly turnovers for the Badgers offense. In their first outing of the season, the Wisconsin Badgers offense may not have taken many chances but they did capitalize on what the defense allowed them to have.
Quarterback Tyler Van Dyke made the necessary throws and hit open receivers with great throws for the Badgers in his first start. Van Dyke took some risks, particularly in the second half and almost turned the ball over, but overall played smart football for the Wisconsin football team. The Badgers will likely look to do more of the same and work their way down the field against the Alabama Crimson tide.
