The Wisconsin football staff has worked hard to scout the 2026 recruiting class, and a certain recruit has expressed interest in the staff.

Damon Ferguson, a 2026 four-star recruit from Maryland, has become a primary scouting target for the Wisconsin football staff after offering a scholarship in May. Ferguson is a versatile athlete who has drawn plenty of collegiate attention as he currently holds 20 scholarship offers with many more still on the way. During a recent interview with Wisconsin Sports Heroics, Ferguson broke down what his contact with Wisconsin has been like, along with what has led to his recruitment boost.

Early on in the recruiting process, the Wisconsin football staff has offered a scholarship to one of the hottest 2026 recruiting as of late. Damon Ferguson, a 2026 four-star athlete, has received plenty of attention since the opening of the recruiting period last month. The boost in his recruitment has largely been due to the fact that Ferguson can play defensive back and running back both at a high level.

Ferguson would be a little too undersized to play a collegiate safety role, but he has already develop a reputation as a cornerback who can cover an island. Quarterbacks do not like challenging Ferguson, and it is largely due to the fact that he can take away a pass at any time. Early on, Ferguson states Rutgers, Pitt, Maryland, Syracuse, Liberty, Stanford, and UCF have been in the closest contact.

Wisconsin Badgers head coach Luke Fickell will be looking for a new wide receivers coach as Mike Brown announced he’s leaving to join the staff at Notre Dame.

For Ferguson, being an athlete during the recruiting process can often become a headache given the decisions needed and the split in his recruiting. However, Ferguson is handling it with ease as he continues to add to his game on both sides of the ball.

At defensive back, Ferguson has been working on his game and skills for the position since he began playing the sport. Ferguson has also worked with a movement specialist since he began playing to improve his footwork and skills as a defensive back. When asked about the experience, the athlete stated, “It’s like don’t waste his time and he’ll give you all the knowledge he has.”

At running back, however, it has been a much different experience for Ferguson as he believes the position has been much different. Ferguson stated “With running back it kind comes natural, but I’m starting to learn more. It’s fun adding to things you can already do.”

The versatility of Ferguson has led to a pretty clear divide in his recruitment as programs decide which position they would like for him to play. When asked, the athlete stated, “I think there is a split on how I’m being recruited regarding offense and defense.” Ferguson went on to state, “I think I can fit regardless of where they [College Coaches] think I can best help the team win.”

What Could the Wisconsin Badgers Football Staff Do With Ferguson on the Field?

In the case of the Wisconsin football staff, and other programs as well, figuring out what to do on the field with Ferguson should not be a challenge. Ferguson, who is an accomplished running back and defensive back, has worked tirelessly to develops his versatility on the field. The athlete feels comfortable enough at each position to benefit his team no matter where they place him.

When asked about his versatility, Ferguson stated, “I think versatility definitely helps but I really work hard at it. At defensive back I have been working with my movement specialist since I was 9 or 10 and he holds the guys he trains to a high standard.”

Remaining at a high standard at the next level is also something that is important to Ferguson when deciding on a program, but the rest of the details are still iffy. When asked about what he is looking for in a program, Ferguson stated “I’m still trying to figure that out, it may be one of those things you just know.” The athlete did add, however, that he enjoys when coaches are “regular” with or without their players in present company.
