The Wisconsin football team has closed their two week stay in Platteville, and will now return to Madison with plenty questions ahead of them.
The Badgers have continued their new tradition of visiting the University of Wisconsin-Platteville to get a different look during camp. After starting camp with plenty of position battles and players to watch, the Wisconsin staff will now need to begin making decisions regarding playing time. Here are three of those intriguing questions regarding playing time that the Wisconsin football staff will need to answer soon.
When Will the Wisconsin Badgers Football Staff Announce a Starting Quarterback?
To close out the final practice in Platteville, the Wisconsin football staff held a scrimmage under the lights to gauge where many of the players on the team are at. One important note regarding this scrimmage is that quarterback Tyler Van Dyke took every first team snap over fellow quarterback Braedyn Locke. The two have been battling against each other for the starting role in a competition that has felt over from the jump.
Despite Van Dyke taking every first team snap, Wisconsin football Head Coach Luke Fickell stated that both quarterbacks “…have a lot to offer to the team.” Fickell still would not commit to naming a starting quarterback of the team just yet and insisted there is still an ongoing battle.
With Van Dyke taking the snaps and outperforming Locke as well, it seems as though the Wisconsin staff is going to wait until they are settled in Madison to announce a decision.
Which Young Cornerback Will Earn a Significant Role on Defense?
The Badgers already have one exceptional cornerback in Ricardo Hallman on their roster, who is arguably the top returning cornerback in the conference. To accompany Hallman, a collection of Max Lofy, Nyzier Fourqurean, and RJ Delancy III.
The Wisconsin football team has quite the cornerback room this season, between playing time potential being up for grabs and players making a comeback. Lofy has impressed this camp and likely could land himself in the cornerback two role behind Hallman. Last season, Lofy did not play due to an injury after carving out a potential starting role.
A year removed from the field, yet Lofy has impressed and shown no signs of rust, but rather a different determination heading into the season. Along with Lofy, fellow returning cornerback Fourqurean has also been fighting for a starting role. Last season with the first with the Badgers for Fourqurean, who had his ups and downs but finished the year with 39 total tackles and two sacks.
For Delancy III, the transfer to the Wisconsin football program from Toledo does not guarantee playing time moving forward. The senior has been battling sophomore Jonas Duclona and freshmen Xavier Lucas and Amare Snowden for a role. Lucas and Duclona in particular have really stood out as potentially depth pieces Wisconsin showcases this season.
Can a Freshman Running Back Benefit the Wisconsin Football Offense Moving Forward?
Wisconsin is pretty set at running back in terms of depth, with seniors Chez Mellusi and Tawee Walker taking on the bulk of the snaps at the position. Wisconsin also has junior Jackson Acker who can deliver a powerful look if needed, along with a collection of freshman running backs.
Among the freshman running backs, Darrion Dupree and Dilin Jones have both been impressive throughout the early portion of camp. In particular, both have shown a willingness to engage in pass blocks and run routes out of the backfield. Wisconsin has plenty of options at the position, perhaps maybe even too many as Nate White is likely being moved to wide receiver, however a freshman may find the field this season.
Both Dupree and Jones offer different looks out of the backfield that the Wisconsin staff has liked, but have not seemed to earn playing time just yet. The freshmen still have a bit more to prove on the field before they are able to make an impact.
