The Wisconsin football staff has worked tirelessly to put together a stronger team ahead of the 2024 football season.
A season ago, the Wisconsin staff had been utilizing out-of-position players or players who did not fit the scheme. Now, the Badgers staff is aiming to develop their players and find a more fluid rhythm on the field for this upcoming season. In order to do so, the Wisconsin football staff is going to rely upon some experienced producers to help the team in big ways.
Wisconsin Badgers Football Team Loaded With Breakout Candidates
After two recruiting cycles and two passes at the transfer portal, the Wisconsin football team has finally reached a point where the majority of players fit the scheme. While last year was certainly not a fluke and Wisconsin truly struggled, the Badgers are hoping to fully turn this around this upcoming season.
In order to reach the point of success the Wisconsin staff has aimed for, there has been plenty of digging to find the correct players for the team. While there have been plenty of additions over the past two years, three players in particular could become massive breakouts this upcoming season for Wisconsin.
Wisconsin Football Breakout Candidate #1: OLB John Pius
Outside linebacker John Pius transferred to Wisconsin this offseason via the transfer portal after a successful career with the William & Mary Tribe. Pius was ranked as a four-star transfer and entered the portal as the 132nd overall recruit.
The 6-foot-4-inch outside linebacker finished his career with the Tribe with the second-highest total of tackles for loss (40.5) and fifth-highest in sacks (24.5) in program history. Pius is a certified tackling machine, whether it be in front of the line or behind it he finds where the football is. Pius already packed a punch in his hits, but now he is reportedly up another 30-pounds this offseason, which could make his frame even scarier on the field.
Wisconsin Football Breakout Candidate #2: DL Ernest Willor Jr
While Ernest Willor Jr may not have the collegiate experience the other breakout candidates possess, he has certainly played at a high level already. Willor Jr has played at IMG Academy and Concordia Prep, two premier football programs at the high school level.
While the defensive lineman is entering a stacked room at Wisconsin, it is hard to imagine a world where someone as skilled as Willor Jr does not touch the field often. Willor Jr provides a combination of speed and power that not many others on the Wisconsin team can match. Due to his ability to disrupt offenses and use his rare combination of skills, it is going to be difficult for opposing offenses to stop Willor Jr.
Wisconsin Football Breakout Candidate #3: WR Trech Kekahuna
One of the personal favorite wide receivers of Offensive Coordinator Phil Longo has been Trech Kekahuna. The Hawaii native struggled to crack the lineup last season behind an abundance of talented wide receivers, but shined during the final game of the season.
Standing in at 5-foot-10-inches, Kekahuna is not a big, physical receiver. Rather, Kekahuna is a blazing fast athlete who can reach just as high as the bigger receiver. Between his speed, jumping ability, and ability to track the football in the air, Wisconsin loves what the receiver has to offer.
Kekahuna will certainly find his way onto the field this season, and with the focus going towards Will Pauling, Kekahuna could find himself open a lot.
