The Wisconsin basketball staff eyed a big-man who can do it all and space the floor this off-season, and found just the player.

Xavier Amos, a former Northern Illinois basketball player, committed to the Wisconsin basketball program after entering the transfer portal. Amos was an unranked recruit coming out of high school, but managed to secure a four-star rating in the transfer portal. The forward broke out last season averaging 13.8 points and 5.8 rebounds per game, which he now may replicate with the Badgers.

Wisconsin Basketball Transfer Forward Xavier Amos Could Become Prime Breakout Candidate

During the off-season transfer portal chaos, the Wisconsin basketball staff had one major goal in mind and that involved finding help in a big way. Wisconsin needed help on both sides of the ball, and quite literally needed “big” help on the team. Eventually, the Badgers were able to find their man as they landed a commitment from former NIU Huskies forward Xavier Amos.

Amos is a dynamic basketball player, walking in at 6-feet-8-inches and weighing nearly 220-pounds. Offensively, Amos is a versatile three-level scorer who excels at catching and shooting the ball, nailing nearly 61% of his shots when doing so. Defensively, Amos is an aggressive defender that often flies through the lane to make incredible blocks.

The Wisconsin basketball staff has loved everything they have seen from Amos, and thus far Amos has expressed a passion for Madison. This upcoming season, however, the forward will have lofty expectations placed upon him due to his potential on the court.

What Does Amos Offer the Wisconsin Badgers Basketball Team on the Court?

On the basketball court, Amos can offer the Wisconsin basketball team a different level of athleticism for his size. The Badgers’ basketball staff had made a point out of recruiting an athletic big man with three-level scoring abilities. The man that Wisconsin ultimately settled on was Amos, who had proven last season that he can fill just that role.

Last season, Amos shot 40% of his field goal attempts at the rim and nailed 64% of those shots that he took. While he took the majority of his shots close to the basket, the forward also has impressive range as he knocked down eight three-point shots beyond 25 feet away.

Another 20% of the shots that Amos took last season came from the top left side of the three-point line. The forward knocked down 34% of his shots when shooting from that area of the court. While Amos only shoots about 16% of his shots from the right side of the three-point line, he is actually more accurate making 37% of his attempts from that area.

As great as he might be on offense, Amos is also an accomplished defender having a 4.3% block rate last season that included five games with three or more blocks.

For Amos, Wisconsin Basketball Offers a New Chance to Succeed

Wisconsin head coach Greg Gard argues a call during the first half of their game against Purdue Sunday, February 4, 2024 at the Kohl Center in Madison, Wisconsin.

After starting his career as an unranked recruit, Amos is determined to make a name for himself on the court and build off of his breakout season last year. Amos is a versatile, multi-faceted player that has the ability to cause chaos offensively and defensively.

Amos is not a novice when it comes to Big Ten Conference play, having played against both Northwestern and Iowa a season ago. The forward scored a career-high 26-points against the Wildcats on four-of-five shooting from deep. Amos has proven he can play against solid competition, and now he will get the chance to do so every game against elevated competition compared to his old schedule with NIU.

Offensively, Amos will also be on a team that compliments his strengths as a player and can allow him to reach his full potential. NIU used Amos often in pick plays whether it be a pick-and-pop with the forward knocking down a three, or a pick-and-roll creating a look at the basket for Amos. With Wisconsin, Amos will be able to take the long-range shots he shoots so well, while also having the opportunity to support the team down low.
