The Wisconsin basketball program had a rough year under Greg Gard. What started out as a promising season turned sour as the team struggled to win close games. Their season ended in the NIT with an embarrassing loss to North Texas. After the subpar season, many fans were wondering if a change in head coach would happen. Wisconsin is committing to Gard as he received an extension today.

Wisconsin Basketball Coach Greg Gard Receives Extension
The athletic board approved one-year extensions for five winter sports coaches. Gard was one of them. His contract now runs through May 31, 2028, meaning that Wisconsin seems to be committed to him long-term. The board does not seem concerned with the lackluster season and is focusing on the full body of work. Last season, the Badgers won a share of the Big Ten regular-season title making it the second time in three seasons the program did so. The board is hoping that this year was an anomaly and Gard can get back to coaching a winning team.

Should They Be Committed?
This season was tough but every program has down seasons. The real question is how the program responds next year. It looks as though they will have pretty much the same team and have added a couple of transfer portal pieces. Freshman standout Connor Essegian should show improvement and others should step up their game as well. Even if the offense is ten percent better, the team will win more games.
Not everyone will be happy about Gard receiving an extension but his overall body of work speaks for itself. He does have to bounce back next season. Another season like this one will not sit well with fans or the board.
