Dusty May’s first Big Ten test as head coach of the Michigan Wolverines will be Wisconsin basketball, which will play host to this conference rivalry game Tuesday night at Kohl Center.
Michigan will enter the game with a 6-1 overall record and on the heels of a five-game win streak, and it will be interesting to see how the Wolverines will fare at Kohl Center, where Wisconsin basketball fans are ready to throw May’s squad off their rhythm.
Dusty May opens up about Kohl Center heading into Michigan-Wisconsin basketball clash
May isn’t exactly new to the Big Ten environment, as he is a graduate of Indiana University and also served as student manager for Bob Knight’s Hoosiers from 1996 to 2000. However, he implied that it was so long ago that it doesn’t matter much anymore to him heading into Tuesday’s game against No. 11 Wisconsin basketball.
“You know how tough it is to win at Wisconsin and how infrequently teams win there,” May said during a press conference on Monday, per Alejandro Zuniga of the Michigan Insider. “But as far as anything else, it’s been a long time. The game’s changed a lot. Personnel’s changed. Coaches have changed. Everything’s changed.”
May also mentioned relying on the likes of Ohio State Buckeyes transfer Roddy Gayle Jr. and Wolverines holdovers when playing in locations where some of his players have more familiarity than him.
“We’ve leaned on Roddy Gayle in some of these situations, and the returners here, about what they remember about playing Wisconsin, what they remember about playing at Wisconsin and things like that. It’s a cumulative effort. As far as my experience at Indiana, nothing more than just sitting in the first row thinking, ‘Man, this is very daunting’ at times. But we built this roster to be in position to win games like this. We’re confident, yet excited,” added May.
The Badgers welcome May and the Wolverines with a clean 8-0 record so far in the 2024-25 college basketball season. They are coming off a 74-53 win over the Chicago State Cougars at home last Saturday while the Wolverines are fresh off a 78-53 victory over the Xavier Musketeers, also last Saturday.
