The Wisconsin Badgers needed some younger players on the roster to step up last week against the Purdue Boilermakers. Wide receiver Trech Kekahuna caught six passes for 134 yards and two touchdowns in a 52-6 win for Wisconsin over Purdue.
Kekahuna averaged 22.6 yards per catch. This was the kind of spark the Badgers needed on offense in the worst way. This was the first time this season that Wisconsin scored over 30 points in a game and they are 3-2 on the season.
Wisconsin Badgers Freshman Wide Receiver Trech Kekahuna Earns BIG10 Freshman Of the Week
The BIG10 Conference announced its awards for Week 6 of the college football season. The Badgers freshman wide receiver earned the honors of being the BIG10 Freshman of the Week with his performance against the Purdue Boilermakers. Kekahuna hauled in a 69-yard touchdown reception for his first career touchdown.
With his performance, he was the first Badgers wide receiver to go over 100 yards receiving since Will Pauling with 143 yards on New Year’s Day against the LSU Tigers. The last time a Badgers wide receiver went over 100 yards receiving in a conference game was on October 8, 2022, against the Northwestern Wildcats. Chimere Dike had those honors with 183 yards receiving in that game as well.
With the way Trech Kekahuna played in this game, hopefully, he will get more of an opportunity moving forward. Kekahuna could be the freshman spark this offense needs. There are already tremendous wide receivers as freshmen this season and some of them are Ryan Williams of the Alabama Crimson Tide, Ryan Wingo of the Texas Longhorns, and Jeremiah Smith of the Ohio State Buckeyes.
Quarterback Braedyn Locke Was the Latest Badgers Player To Win Freshman Of the Week Honors
The last Wisconsin Badgers player to win the Freshman Of the Week honors was quarterback Braedyn Locke back on October 23, 2023. He and Kekahuna developed instant chemistry against the Purdue Boilermakers. They will look to keep it going against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights this weekend.
Locke against Purdue completed 20-of-31 passes for 359 yards, three touchdowns, and two interceptions. He is the starting quarterback for the rest of the season with Tyler Van Dyke out due to injury.
