The Wisconsin Badgers pulled off one of the 2025-26 college basketball season’s biggest stunners thus far when Greg Gard’s team took down the No. 2 Michigan Wolverines in Ann Arbor on Saturday.
In other words, Wisconsin basketball became the first team to beat the Wolverines this season, and the fact that the Badgers did it away from home made that victory even more impressive and memorable.
Despite being unranked, Wisconsin took the fight to the favored Wolverines. The Badgers have built quite a reputation for their ability to shock highly-ranked teams, particularly when they’re unranked.

This is Wisconsin’s 7th win under Greg Gard versus AP Top 5 opponents as an unranked team. That is the most of wins of any DI team in that span (since 2015-16)
Wisconsin gives resume a shot in the arm with win against Michigan
The Badgers were No. 24 on the AP Poll rankings before the season and rose to as high as No. 23 during the campaign, but losses to the likes of TCU, Nebraska and Villanova had Wisconsin falling out of the Top 25.
With their takedown of the Wolverines, though, the Badgers could be in line for a return to the Top 25. Either way, Wisconsin has given its March Madness resume a nice boost. It was also Wisconsin’s first Quadrant 1 victory.
The Badgers, who improved to 11-5 overall and 3-2 in Big Ten play, will look to sustain their form and win their third game in a row this Tuesday against the Minnesota Golden Gophers at Williams Arena in Minneapolis.
