Former Wisconsin Badgers head coach Paul Chryst could potentially be back as a head coach in the college football landscape sometime soon. He was the Badgers head coach from 2014 to 2022. When he was with the Badgers, his record was 67-26 overall and 43-18 in BIG10 Conference play.
Chryst was not on any coaching staff in college football after being on the Texas Longhorns coaching staff a year ago as an OA/special assistant to the head coach. There are some jobs that opened up on Sunday in the college football landscape.
CBS Sports Will Backus Reports That the Purdue Boilermakers Could Target Former Wisconsin Badgers Coach Paul Chryst As Next Head Coach
On Sunday, the Purdue Boilermakers fired Ryan Walters as head coach of the football program after just two seasons. Purdue finished with a 1-11 record and lost to the Indiana Hoosiers on Saturday night on the road by a final score of 66-0. It will be interesting to see who will be the next head coach for Purdue.
On Sunday, CBS Sports writer Will Backus reported that one of the names who could potentially be the next head coach of the Purdue Boilermakers is former Wisconsin Badgers head coach Paul Chryst. Backus said:
“Chryst has been out of the full-time coaching game for a couple of years, but he is a rare option with ready-made Big Ten experience with nothing really tying him down. A former quarterback at Wisconsin, Chryst spent several years as an assistant at his alma mater, got his first head coaching opportunity at Pittsburgh and returned to Madison in 2015 to replace Gary Andersen. Chryst won 10 games in four of his first five seasons and guided the Badgers to three Big Ten West titles in the same span. Though Wisconsin faltered a bit from 2020-22, leading to Chryst’s eventual firing five games into the 2022 campaign, he never had a losing Big Ten record in a full season with the program. It seems like Chryst is a solid candidate to return to coaching if he desires.”
Chryst would be a safe hire for the Boilermakers. Paul Chryst understands the nature of the BIG10 Conference and he would make Purdue a respectable football program once again.
Keep An Eye On Ryan Day
There are other potential candidates for the Purdue Boilermakers job, but one name to watch out for is Ohio State Buckeyes head coach Ryan Day. There is a chance that Day and the Buckeyes could part ways after the season unless they win the national title.
It will be interesting to see how long Purdue takes with the job search. Are they willing to take their time with this hire or will they want someone right away? It is something that remains to be seen and it would be funny if Purdue hired former Wisconsin Badgers coach Paul Chryst to lead their program.
