Both Wisconsin Badgers and Marquette Golden Eagles played two games last week but the results did not favor the latter, affecting their latest AP Top 25 Poll ranking.
The Badgers pulled off a narrow win against the Ohio State Buckeyes and then followed it up with a dominant win in visit to USC Trojans.
The two victories allowed them to climb to the AP Top 25 College Basketball rankings from 24th spot to 18th.
The leap is the largest among all teams, tied with Purdue Boilermakers who went from no. 17 to no. 11.
Badgers can break into the top 10 if their winning streak continues, especially if they win by double digits.
That should not be a far-fetched idea as Greg Gard expressed confidence on his team who he thinks is still trending upwards.
We’re not dependent on one specific guy or two specific guys, in that case. And then they’ve grown. That’s a credit to the players and our staff. They’ve grown and gotten better. We’re still trending upward, which we need to continue to do.
Marquette Golden Eagles dropped in the AP ranking
Badgers’ state rivals Marquette Golden Eagles has a different story.
The team went 1-1 in the same week and it lead to dropping to no. 10 from last time’s no. 7 ranking.
Coach Shaka Smart’s squad had a hard time beating DePaul Blue Demons, settling for an 85-83 win after the overtime period.
The next game was a close one, too, but this time, the victory did not go their way. Marquette lost to Xavier University, 57-59, after another slow first half start.
