The Wisconsin Badgers and Minnesota Gophers are long-standing rivals. The two Universities have played each other 132 times and are currently dead even. Their overall record is 62-62-8. New Wisconsin head coach Luke Fickell has already had a taste of the rivalry and the two teams haven’t even taken the field yet. PJ Fleck has reportedly accused Wisconsin of “negative recruiting.” When Joe Thomas heard this, he had something to say.
Joe Thomas Rips PJ Fleck’s Accusations:
Joe Thomas took to Twitter to let the fans know how he feels about PJ Fleck’s remarks:
… and why would he? Doesn’t need to punch down to that other program to the west, our sights are set a lot higher then just winning the axe

Since 2004, the Wisconsin Badgers have gone 16-3 against the Gophers. For 14 straight years they didn’t lose a game (2004-2017). While the Gophers are on a two game win streak, the Badgers have dominated the rivalry for the last two decades. Joe Thomas was there when the domination started. He attended the University Of Wisconsin from 2003-2006. He started his career (in 2003) as a blocking tight end. However, in 2004 he started all 12 games at left tackle, and the rest was history.
Thomas also makes another valid point. While “The Axe” is the ultimate bragging right between these two Universities, Luke Fickell has brought a championship mindset to Madison. On National Signing Day Fickell managed to get 11 3-star athletes and 3 four-star athletes to sign a national letter of intent to Wisconsin. Currently the Badgers rank 5th in the Big Ten for the 2023 recruiting class. Only Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State, and Michigan State rank higher. However, Fickell has proven how successful he is at developing players way beyond their rank. The future is bright in Madison and there is good reason for it.
