Rebuilding After a Challenging Season for the Wisconsin Badgers
After a disappointing 2022 season that saw the Badgers finish with a 13-23-0 overall record, including a 6-18 conference record, longtime head coach Tony Granato coached his last games with the Wisconsin Badgers. This decision prompted the need for a fresh start and a revamped team. The addition of Tyson Dyck, along with other talented transfers, signals a renewed sense of optimism for the Badgers as they aim to bounce back in the upcoming season.
Tyson Dyck’s Journey to the Wisconsin Badgers Hockey Program
Tyson Dyck, a freshman in the 2022 season, showcased his skills in 29 games for UMass, recording nine points with five goals and four assists.
Before his college career started, the Ottawa Senators selected Dyck as the 206th overall pick in the 2022 NHL Entry Draft. He had previously committed to an NCAA Division-1 program in UMass.
After being drafted and before suiting up for the Minutemen, the incredibly talented forward made waves during his first full season in the BCHL (British Columbia Hockey League). Over the course of 54 games, Dyck showcased his skills by amassing an impressive 75 points, consisting of 34 goals and 41 assists. His outstanding performance earned him recognition, ranking him 110th overall among draft-eligible North American skaters on NHL Central Scouting’s year-end rankings.
Prior to his BCHL stint, Dyck honed his skills in the Burnaby Winter Club Prep program before joining the Bucks for the 2021 pod season in Penticton. Despite a shortened campaign due to injury, Dyck still managed to contribute 5 points in just 6 games, demonstrating his impact on the ice.
Throughout his time with the Cranbrook Bucks, Dyck has established himself as a trailblazer, setting new standards in various offensive categories. He leads the team in goals, assists, and points, solidifying his position as a key player in the lineup.
Interestingly, Dyck had a previous connection with Coach Hastings, as the latter had recruited him to Minnesota State. Despite ultimately committing to UMass, the opportunity to reunite with Hastings in Wisconsin proved irresistible for Dyck.
The Prospect of Rebuilding:
With Coach Hastings at the helm, the Wisconsin Badgers Men’s Hockey program is entering a phase of rebuilding. The arrival of Tyson Dyck and other transfers brings a fresh infusion of talent to the team. Dyck’s versatility and scoring ability make him a valuable asset on the ice. Throughout his freshman year, Dyck demonstrated his offensive prowess with two power-play goals and two game-winning goals. He also contributed to the team’s success with four multi-point games and one multi-goal game, showcasing his ability to make an impact.
