The Wisconsin Badgers football staff has turned their attention to one of the top Junior College prospects following transfer portal misses.

Demetrius Freeney, a rising Sophomore at The College of San Mateo in California, has recently been contacted by the Badgers staff. Freeney is set to play this season for his Junior College, however the recruit plans on visiting Madison before the start of the season. After missing out on big transfers like Josh DeBerry and Antonio Carter, the Badgers still seem eager to boost their defense.

Freeney, a true Freshman standout for San Mateo last year, won the Junior College National Championship a year ago during his first collegiate season. Freeney did not record any incredible statistics, but made excellent plays when his team needed him to. His contribution to their recent National Championship has not gone unnoticed, with Freeney receiving six scholarship offers since the end of the season. The Badgers are the seventh team to join his recruitment, with staff member Paul Haynes leading the recruitment.
Coming in at 6-foot-1-inch, 185-pounds, Freeney has both the size and burning speed to make a difference at a Division I program in the future. Freeney is a blazing defensive back with experience running track in high school, recording a 10.9 100-meter dash. This past season, Freeney put his speed on display as he left the offense in the dust on multiple interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown.
Along with his impressive speed and size, Freeney also provides incredible field vision as a defensive back. Freeney regularly reads the field to read where the next play will be, and given his speed, he is able to make it there in-time. Freeney has the ability to roam in a zone or slide over to the slot to cover his man. Regardless of where he is, it is unlikely his man will get past him.
Wisconsin Badgers Recruiting Profile: Demetrius Freeney
Currently, the talented defensive back has two programs leading in his recruitment, which are Louisville and Colorado. For the Wisconsin Badgers, the recruitment of Freeney is still fairly new, but once he receives an offer from the team it could shift his standing. Coach Luke Fickell has been eager to land another defensive back to add to their already strong defensive presence. With another slot corner back coming into the team, Fickell would feel more confident in the depth of his defense going into next season.

The Badgers are focused on consistently evolving as a team. The other players the Badgers had gone after in the transfer portal only had a year of eligibility left. However, Freeney will transfer over with at least two more years of eligibility. The defensive back will also provide collegiate experience to a young Badgers team, which is another aspect of the Badgers coach Fickell has focused on as of late.
Continuing to build an experience football program from head to toe will be major for the Wisconsin Badgers. After missing out on some talented transfer options, the Badgers may turn to the exceptional Junior College product to fill the void in the secondary.
