The Wisconsin Badgers football and basketball coaches each got their chances to speak to an amazing dual-sport recruit during his time in Madison on campus. 2024 four-star wide receiver and point guard Daniel Freitag from Minnesota has got the Badgers fans buzzing after his recent visit. Freitag spoke with coaches Luke Fickell and Greg Gard, leaving fans with the question of which sport is more likely to land the talented recruit?
Two Wisconsin Badgers Head Coaches Battle Four-Star Daniel Freitag
Daniel Freitag is a six foot three inch, 175 pound point guard and wide receiver from Bloomington, Minnesota. Freitag is ranked as a four-star athlete in both sports, with the majority of his offers lying in basketball. Freitag is also the top ranked recruit in Minnesota for each sport, but currently only holds four football offers. The Wisconsin Badgers, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, and Minnesota Golden Gophers are the only teams to offer Freitag in both sports.
The impressive dual-sport athlete played in his first year on varsity this past season, doing everything for his football team. Freitag recorded two passing touchdowns, five rushing touchdowns, and four receiving touchdowns in eight games of action. Freitag finished with 952 total yards and 11 touchdowns for an average of 119 yards per game. On his basketball team, Freitag averaged 29 points, 10.1 rebounds, and four assists per game this past season before making a major announcement.

Freitag had attended Jefferson High School in Minnesota for the first three years of his career, but will now finish out high school elsewhere. The talented recruit announced recently via Twitter that he would be attending Southern California Academy to play for their basketball team. The Academy does not have a football team, which means Freitag will have to take a year off from the sport before potentially playing in college. Freitag seems primed to play basketball in college, but playing both sports is not out of the question.
The most recent visit to Madison this past week for Freitag was listed as a football visit, as the recruit was there to meet with coach Luke Fickell. During his travels, coach Greg Gard also got his chance to speak to Freitag before the recruit left the building. Freitag had his chance to witness the new Wisconsin Badgers football staff in action as the team increased their physicality in practice. Fickell and Gard both love the idea of landing the talented dual-sport athlete, but Freitag still needs to decide if he is fully committed to playing both sports.
Wisconsin Badgers Football or Basketball For Talented Athlete?
With Daniel Freitag already primed to spend a year without touching the gridiron, it appears as though basketball is the more important sport for the recruit. Freitag has offers for both sports, so it makes sense for the recruit to meet with teams for each. However, given his extreme success this past season on the basketball court, Freitag may have already made up his mind.
Southern California Academy is still a very new program, but has still seen many players advance to the collegiate level. Freitag will join an experienced team for his final season before making his decision on where he will go, as well as what sport he will play.
