The Wisconsin Badgers have completed the flip of a solid 2025 recruiting class Miami (OH) commitment in the secondary.
Cairo Skanes, a 2025 cornerback, was previously committed to Miami before announcing a flip in his commitment to the Badgers. Skanes is an unranked recruit, but holds offers from multiple big name schools including the Michigan State Spartans who also recently hosted the recruit. Wisconsin had been a major player in the recruitment of Skanes over the last few months, and that recruitment has paid off in the end.
Skanes visited the Wisconsin Badgers for a game and did the same with the Badgers, which threw the recruit onto the commitment flip radar during late October. The cornerback joins the 2025 recruiting class for the Badgers just minutes after the program lost a second cornerback to the transfer portal.
Jonas Duclona joined Amare Snowden in the portal after a difficult 2024 season on and off of the field in Madison. Duclona has yet to truly speak on his decision, however, Snowden was incredibly vocal about position coach Paul Haynes being a contributing factor in his decision. Snowden also added that he would remain a member of the program if Haynes were not the position coach, however that is not going to be the case for the Wisconsin Badgers.
Haynes apparently has a great relationship with much of the youth in the cornerback room, having landed Xavier Lucas, Omillio Agard, and Jay Harper to name a few additions. Skanes will join the players attracted to the program by Haynes and very well could become a solid developmental piece for the defense.
The Wisconsin Badgers have placed a premium on development the past two years and have recruited players in each of the last two classes with limited exposure but high upsides.
Wisconsin Badgers Adding Recruits While Subtracting Players From the Program
The North Carolina native is a tall, thin cornerback that still needs to add size to his frame ahead of college football, standing in at 6-feet and 155-pounds. Skanes was previously a heavily recruited FCS prospect with plenty of offers from smaller schools, however Duke, NC State, and Charlotte opened up the major offers for the cornerback.
Skanes is a quick, snappy player that can get off of the line quickly allowing him to drop into coverage where he truly excels. Despite his weight, Skanes is a physical cornerback that is not afraid to use up every yard allowed for hand fighting and shoving before the route truly develops.
The cornerback has dealt with a combination of being in an area with limited exposure as well as being a bit of an undersized player.
With the right coaching and the correct expertise around the cornerback, the Wisconsin Badgers could certainly turn Skanes into a capability cornerback moving forward.
