There is nothing like a rivalry game and then there’s nothing like losing a rivalry. Braedyn Locke and the Wisconsin Badgers football team must be having trouble sleeping after getting wiped on the floor by their rivals Minnesota Golden Gophers, 7-24, on Friday.
The Wisconsin team came into the Border Battle with a one-game lead in all-time head-to-head, reason why most of their supporters have a high expectation.
Whatever they expected did not happen as they were manhandled by the Grophers.
Locke, who is in his sophomore year, did not mince words in describing the loss.
“This is a low for our program. It’s a low for myself, something I’ve never experienced as a football player. It’s something that a lot of guys on our team have never experienced. … It’s a hard feeling,” he said post game.
“This is something that we never want to feel again.”
Fans who braved the cold weather found nothing to cheer about for their mid-way in the first half. The two teams traded punches but when Minnesota started rolling, Wisconsin just did not have an answer.
Locke and his team were even booed by the fans at one point.
Luke Fickell is as devastated as Braedyn Locke
Wisconsin just appeared lost in the game, especially on the offensive end.
Their 166 yards gained is their lowest this season, their lowest in eight years since the 159 yards when they lost 14-7 to Michigan in 2016.
Coach Luke Fickell, who many fans now want fired, sound dejected after the match.
“I’m not going to sit here and make any excuses, right?” a gloomy Fickell told reporters after the game.
“But when we got to a position where whether it’s injuries, whether it’s emotion, this is a team, unfortunately, that’s beat up physically, mentally and emotionally, and we couldn’t come out. We couldn’t pull ourselves out of the hole. I can’t say exactly why.”
