Where Would the Bucks Be Without Bobby?

Bobby Portis – or Bobby POTUS, whichever you prefer – has become a fan favorite, right alongside Giannis. But where would the Bucks be without Bobby this season? It’s safe to say that Portis has been called upon this year more than any point in his career. The eight-year pro has found a home in Milwaukee, embracing everything this state is and more. He’s tough, gritty, and plays with a chip on his shoulder.

    Winning Record

When healthy, Bobby Portis has anchored the Bucks at the center position. His natural role is power forward, but due to the injury of Brook Lopez, Portis has stepped into the starting center spot. Milwaukee has a 22-13 record in the games that Portis has played. During the games that Portis was inactive, Milwaukee has a record of 5-4, with bad losses coming to the Spurs and Pelicans.

    Bobby’s Career Year

The Brook Lopez injury has certainly given Portis more opportunities, and he’s taken full advantage of them. In the four of the eight common statistical categories, Portis is posting the best numbers of his career. These are his numbers in his 35 games played:

    • 28.3 minutes
    • 15.5 points
    • 48.2 FG%
    • 43.4 3pt%
    • 9.1 rebounds
    • 1.3 assists
    • 0.8 steals
    • 0.8 blocks

Portis’s career stats are in the minutes, points, rebounds, and blocks categories.

    The Future

This offseason, the Bucks made signing Portis a top priority. Just a season ago, he arguably had a chance to be named 6th Man of the Year. If Bobby wanted more money, he could have ventured out and achieved a bigger salary elsewhere. Instead, he resigned with the Bucks for a very team friendly deal: two years and nine million dollars. Next season, Portis will have a player option, so it should be interesting to see what he decides to do.

With the trade deadline looming, Milwaukee will undoubtedly look to bolster their front court. Have no fear, Bobby won’t be going anywhere. His versatility is too valuable for the Bucks organization to lose. Could we see Bobby move back into a bench role if Milwaukee decides to go after a true center? Time will tell.
