Jim Callis, Jonathan Mayo, and Sam Dykstra of MLB.com released their updated farm rankings today and the Brewers come in at No. 19. The Brew Crew has a total of three prospects in the MLB Top 100 prospects (No. 11 OF Jackson Chourio, No. 49 OF Sal Frelick, and No. 89 OF Joey Wiemer). This is the first time the Brewers have been inside the top 20 farm systems in a long time. Here is what the writers had to say
Is this jump into the Top 20 solely based on Chourio? We wouldn’t go that far, but the 18-year-old breakout phenom certainly plays a strong role. Chourio could be the top prospect in the game at some point once he gains experience and tightens up some of his swing-and-miss concerns. Frelick is a strong second-best prospect, having climbed three levels in his first full season. With Wiemer, Garrett Mitchell and the recently acquired Esteury Ruiz, outfield remains by far the deepest group for Milwaukee. No other position group comes close, thus the ranking. Pitching got a boost through trades and the Draft, but the fact that second-rounder Jacob Misiorowski is the top-ranked arm at No. 9 speaks volumes. – MLB.com
The writers are understandably high on Chourio who could one day be the cornerstone of the Brewers franchise. At least we hope so. There are a lot of good bats in the farm system when Misiorowski is your top-ranked pitcher all the way back at No. 9. Misiorowski is a six-foot-seven, 190-pound, fireball thrower that was committed to playing for LSU until the Brewers came calling in the second round of the draft. His ceiling is through the roof. He has incredible potential to be a star pitcher in the bigs.
Sal Frelick is currently playing for the Nashville Sounds (Brewers AAA team). He started the season in A+ ball but has since rocketed his way to AAA and is only one step below the majors. His stats show why he has had such a meteoric rise as he is hitting .333 this season between all three levels and he is 17 for his last 38 (.447 average) just in AAA. Joey Wiemer is currently playing for the Sounds. So far he’s hitting .240 in AAA. He is nine for his last 36 (.250 average) at the plate.
