The Packers came up short in 2021 in getting back to the Super Bowl, but they will certainly look to bounce back in 2022. So far, the Packers have been off to a great start this offseason. Aaron Rodgers is officially back as the Packers’ quarterback for the foreseeable future. Also, Davante Adams just got the franchise tag and will be with the Packers next season. Having those two players back on the team is huge. With that being said, here is what to expect from the Packers in 2022.
Aaron Rodgers Wins His Third Straight MVP
It’s official: Aaron Rodgers is staying with the Packers. That is great news for the team, as he is arguably the best quarterback in NFL. Rodgers has won back-to-back MVPs and he could likely win it again for the third year in a row next season.
Aaron Rodgers, in Matt LaFleur’s quarterback-friendly system, has elevated his game and is still playing at a high level. The result has been two straight MVP awards. With many key players on offense returning, everyone hopefully staying healthy, and a fourth-year in LaFleur’s system, expect Aaron Rodgers to have another MVP season.
The Packers Will Have the Number One Offense
Despite all the injuries they had in 2021, the Packers still had an effective offensive line. They were top ten in pass blocking and Aaron Rodgers was only the 20th most sacked quarterback in the NFL.
David Bakhtiari will be back next year after missing most of the season in 2021. Jon Runyan will be at left guard, Josh Myers at center, and Billy Turner at right tackle. The only question mark is, will Royce Newman take that second-year jump at right guard? Not to mention, Elgton Jenkins will be back mid-season from his torn ACL and that will make the Packers’ offensive line dominant.
In 2020, when the offensive line was mostly healthy, the Packers had the number one offense in the NFL. Expect that again with most of their guys returning and hopefully staying at full strength.
Green Bay Will Get After Opposing Quarterbacks
Unfortunately, Za’Darius Smith will be a cap casualty and will most likely be cut from the Packers. However, he was out for most of last season and the Packers’ pass rush was still very good. The emergence of Rashan Gary and Preston Smith bouncing back were both good signs.
Preston Smith and Gary will be the two main pass rushers this year for Green Bay. Johnathan Garvin showed promise as part of the edge rotation, and he will be returning to the Packers for his third season with the team. The NFL Draft is also filled with really good edge rushers the Packers can look at selecting.
Overall, the Packers look good at edge rush… even with Za’Darius Smith most likely being gone.
The Packers Will Have A Top Five Secondary
Green Bay’s secondary is looking very strong heading into the 2022 season. They have two bookend corners on the outside in Jaire Alexander and Eric Stokes. Rasul Douglas has expressed his desire to return to the team and if he does, the Packers will have a very dangerous secondary. Adrian Amos and Darnell Savage will be returning as starters for the Packers, and those two are a great duo. Guys like Chandon Sullivan and Kevin King might be brought back, as they provide very good depth at the corner position.
Depth at safety is something the Packers may need to look into. Vernon Scott was a healthy scratch most of last year and Henry Black had his moments, but was a liability at times on the field. In the end, this will be a really talented secondary that can give opposing offenses problems this year.
Jones and Dillon Will Both Have 1,000+ Yards From Scrimmage
Aaron Jones and A.J. Dillon have proven to be a true one-two punch for the Packers. Each brings a different element to Green Bay’s offense, a combination of speed and power. Both running backs had over one thousand yards from scrimmage in 2021. Expect the same result again in the 2022 season.
This is because they are more familiar with the Packers’ system, having Aaron Rodgers at quarterback takes the pressure off them, and they’ll have a solid – hopefully consistent – offensive line. With both guys returning next year, expect another dominant season and another one thousand yards from scrimmage from each of them.
