The catching market has been a hot topic this offseason. Whether it be trying to upgrade through trade or free agency, available catchers currently have a high asking price. The Athletics have announced that Sean Murphy will cost major league players. Top free agent catcher Willson Contreras signed with the Cardinals. Currently, Christian Vazquez is the top available free agent catcher. Here we will take a look at what his value on the market may be.
What is the market value for Brewers free agent target Christian Vasquez?
According to spotrac, the 32 year old Vasquez should land a contract with an AAV of $6.7MM. Vasquez made $7.0MM in 2022 and $6.25MM in 2021. Spotrac also believes an ideal contract length for him would be for three years. This brings his total value to three years, $20.1MM. This offseason may be the last contract that he signs, so he likely will not want a one year contract.
MLB trade rumors recently posted their predictions on the market value for Vasquez. They predict that he will land a three year, $27.0MM deal. This has his AAV at $9.0MM. This is quite a bit higher than spotrac, but given he is the best available catcher on the free agent market, being closer to $9.0MM may be more realistic than $6.7MM.
If the true market value for Vasquez is closer to $9.0MM, then this may push him out of the price range for the Brewers. The Brewers do have some extra money from Disney this year, so perhaps they will use that towards a free agent. If they don’t, then they could be saving that money for a potential contract extension to either Corbin Burnes, Brandon Woodruff, or Willy Adames.
