Whether or not Aaron Rodgers will be under center for Green Bay in 2023 remains up in the air. Many fans don’t believe either side would have agreed to his massive three-year extension back in March if the end goal was just one year. 2022 has been a disappointment so far, but it may just be a building block for something better in 2023. So what does the cap hit for Aaron Rodgers look like in 2023 if he does come back? What about if he retires? We will break it all down right here for you.
Aaron Rodgers’ Cap Hit In 2023
First of all, whether he keeps playing or not Rodgers will likely have a big cap number for the Packers in 2023. Over The Cap has his listed cap hit for 2023 at $31.62M. That is if Rodgers is back on the 53-Man roster when next season starts.
One thing the Packers won’t do is cut Aaron Rodgers. The repercussions for that would be massive. The Packers would have to pay a dead cap hit of $99.78 million, per Over The Cap. That’s over three times higher than his current cap hit for 2023, so it would make no sense. Even if the Packers decided to move onto Jordan Love as their starting QB, cutting Rodgers won’t be an option.
Rodgers’ dead cap hit still be high if Rodgers decided to retire, but wouldn’t be as bad if he was cut. According to Spotrac, Rodgers would walk away from $59.5 million if he retires this offseason. That’s a significant amount of money for anyone in this world. However, the Packers would still have to pay $40.3 million in dead cap.
The risks to Aaron Rodgers’ contract extension were well known when he re-signed. If the Packers weren’t in contention for the Super Bowl it would come under heavy scrutiny. However, they still have at least one more year of a realistic cap hit with the four-time MVP quarterback. If Aaron Rodgers wants to run it back one more year, the Packers should take full advantage.
