It was the final day of the US Open and the number one golfing amateur in the world, Gordon Sargent, stepped up to sink his last shot of the tournament that would see him out to a final score of 3 over par. It was a fairly simple putt. A straight-shooting three-footer that anyone in the tournament should be able to make. Sargent stroked at the ball with his putter, the ball went straight into the hole…then back out. He stood, stunned. Much like the rest of the crowd and people on Twitter.
The General Consensus
The general reaction from fans is that this was all the grounds crew’s fault. They simply didn’t cut the holes deep enough into the ground. Which makes sense when you watch the video. The ball seems to drop in at the perfect angle that it just bounces straight off the plastic in the cup to make its great escape back out onto the turf. This is will be a difficult moment for LA Country Club to swallow.
