In his first spring with the Milwaukee Brewers Tyson Miller was enjoying a great month of March with the Brew Crew. Unfortunately news has broken that he will not make the opening day roster and has instead been optioned down to Triple-A. This move makes the bullpen picture pretty clear just four days before opening day.
The Brewers optioned RHP Tyson Miller to Triple-A Nashville, leaving 14 healthy-ish pitchers in camp. But that includes Adrian Houser, who might not be healthy. He’s being examined today after exiting yesterday’s outing against the A’s with groin tightness.

Milwaukee Brewers reliever Tyson Miller has been optioned to Triple-A.
Tyson Miller, who was claimed off of waivers in November, had a great spring with the Brewers. He pitched 10 innings over six appearances and had a 0.90 ERA. On top of that he has struck out 11 batters while allowing just four hits and four free passes.
On the mound, Miller is unique in that he has a lower release point and he tends to generate a lot of looking strikes on his backdoor cutter. He can throw his fastball and sinker in the low to mid 90’s, but he gets a lot of extension off the mound. This makes his pitches play faster, especially when thrown higher in the zone.
Unfortunately for Miller, roster flexibility in the form of having MiLB options remaining may have cost him an opening day roster spot. If you take a look at the remaining players in the Brewers bullpen there are quite a few that are out of MiLB options. This includes Javy Guerra, Joel Payamps, and Bryse Wilson. Gus Varland, a Rule-5 draft selection, also does not have the ability to be shuttled this year.
Here are the 14 Brewers pitchers still in the running for 13 spots on Opening Day:
Burnes
Woodruff
Lauer
Peralta
MileyWilliams
Bush
Milner
Strzelecki
Guerra
Varland
Payamps
Wilson
HouserIf Houser is out, it’s set. But remember, always the chance of an outside add.

As Adam McCalvy pointed out, if Adrian Houser, who is battling a groin issue, is unable to go for opening day then the Brewers bullpen is set. If Houser is ready to go, Milwaukee will have to make a decision on one more pitcher for 13 pitchers is the maximum number allowed on the active roster.
Opening day is scheduled for Thursday March 30, but the Brewers bullpen group is pretty much set.
