Joe Garceau will be stepping down as the head boys’ basketball coach at Roncalli High School in Manitowoc. Coach Garceau would’ve been entering his eighth year with the Jets program, coming off a state championship win. The 2021-22 season saw Roncalli finish 26-3, capping it all off with a 10-point win over MSOE to claim the Division 4 state championship.
Official announcement:
Joe Garceau, who guided Roncalli to the WIAA D4 state title with a win over Milwaukee Academy of Science last March, has stepped down in order to take a business teaching position in the Monona Grove district. Garceau had a 138-45 record in 7 years as the Jets' coach.

Garceau was able to coach Roncalli greats such as Chombi Lambert and Luke Pautz in his tenure with the program. Other than this past season, Roncalli won the state championship back in the 2017-18 season. Garceau’s squad was also primed to make a run in the 2019-20 season, however that was cut short due to COVID. A trip to state was realized just one season prior, however it featured a heartbreaking defeat to New Glarus in the opening game.
Overall, a 75.41% winning percentage with two state championships in seven seasons is extremely rare. Joe Garceau was gifted with great talent. More importantly he knew how to manage his stars and surrounded himself with a fantastic set of assistants. The atmosphere and comradery between the Jets players was unlike anything seen at the high school level. A defense first mind-set isn’t always a coaches first priority in this era of basketball… however, it was Garceau’s recipe for success.
Coach Garceau went out with a state championship which is something every coach dreams of. His leadership and knowledge adopted from Roncalli legend, Rux, is something that will hopefully be passed down to the next generation of head coaches.
Joe Garceau will be dearly missed at Roncalli High School, but we all here at Wisconsin Sports Heroics wish him the best in the Monona Grove district!
