As 2021 draws to an end, Wisconsin sports fans have a lot to be thankful for. The Milwaukee Bucks won the 2021 NBA Championship, the Badgers had another season of sustained success in multiple sports, and the Green Bay Packers are looking like Super Bowl favorites. While the Milwaukee Brewers fell short of where we’d like them to be, they’re still winning in a small market, in a sport dominated by big spenders.
As we move forward into 2022, Wisconsin sports fans should be really excited for what’s to come. More specifically, here are three wishes for Wisconsin sports as we head into the new year!
1.) Packers Win the Super Bowl
Super Bowl LVI is right around the corner; 43 days after the new year begins to be exact. One thing almost every Wisconsin sports fan is wishing for is for the Packers to finally get over the last obstacle and bring home another Super Bowl.
This wish is arguably the most realistic of the three since Green Bay is already looking like the favorites to win it all. However, the job is nowhere near finished yet. With the potential returns of Jaire Alexander, David Bakhtiari, and Za’Darius Smith in the coming weeks, the Packers are going to get a lot stronger at the perfect time.
With luck on our side, Wisconsin sports fans can have their first wish come true on the night of February 13th, 2022.
2.) Bucks Repeat as NBA Champions
After a storybook 2020-21 season, the Milwaukee Bucks won their first championship in 50 years. The Bucks, led by Giannis Antetokounmpo, grabbed the attention of the world and showed that determination and hard work can win you a championship, no matter how many superstars team up against you.
Heading into 2022, the NBA as a whole has been ravaged by COVID issues. The Milwaukee Bucks have taken multiple punches from COVID and remain the team with the most wins in the Eastern Conference. Even after a championship-winning season, they’ve somehow gotten stronger and are a more formidable opponent than last year.
The second wish shared by nearly every Wisconsin sports fan is to have the Bucks repeat as NBA champions. Giannis deserves a second ring to go along with his multiple MVP awards. How sweet would it be for Giannis to win back-to-back titles after everyone said he made a mistake re-signing with Milwaukee?
3.) Brewers and Badger Football Make Championship Appearances
The Milwaukee Brewers and Wisconsin Badgers are both well-rounded teams with a couple of star players. Normally that is a formula for a championship contender; however, in both the MLB and College Football, Wisconsin sports haven’t been to break through to a championship game in a long time.
The Milwaukee Brewers are getting really close to having all of the necessary pieces to make it happen. With Cy Young award winner Corbin Burnes leading the rotation, the Brewers pitching staff is scary. All they need to do is add some key bats to the lineup to complete the squad, and the Brewers have a shot at making this final wish come true.
The Wisconsin Badgers football team just ended 2021 with a bowl game win against Arizona State. While it is key that Wisconsin sports fans don’t take for granted sustained success, it can be annoying that the Badgers always get so close but never do enough to make it to a College Football Playoff game. In 2022, they’ll have a very experienced team led by young stud Braelon Allen. Next season is going to be the best shot the Badgers have at a CFP appearance. They’ve got to make it count.
