When Bobby Portis was first signed, many people questioned whether or not the Bucks brought in enough help to bring them a championship. Portis was never seen as a game-changer, but he became that this season.
Bobby Portis just had his best season
In his fewest minutes since his second year, Bobby arguably had the best season of his career. Bobby played just under 21 minutes, and he averaged 11.4 points and 7.1 rebounds. His Per 36 would have been 20 points and 12 rebounds. He shattered his career highs in Field Goal percentage (52.3%) and 3PT percentage (47.1%).
He had the highest Offensive Rating of his career, by far. Bobby’s Offensive Rating this season was 121. His previous career-high was at 110. His Offensive Box Plus/Minus was the second-highest of his career at 2.0. Even his Win Share and Offensive Win Shares were also the highest of his career, at 4.8 and 2.8, respectively. Even with his offensive and rebounding outputs being some of the best of his career, his defense even improved from 2019-2020.
Portis had the highest Defensive Rating since his second year with 109. 109 is the highest Defensive Rating he’s ever had playing 20+ minutes. For reference, the league average for Defensive Rating is 112.3. His Defensive Box Plus/Minus was at -0.6, which was the highest of his career. His Defensive Win Share was at 2.0, which was also the highest of his career.
Bobby Buckets is killing it in the Playoffs
Bobby is averaging 16 minutes a game in the playoffs. He’s averaging a little over 7 points and just under 5 rebounds a game in limited playing time. He’s scored double-digit points four points throughout the Bucks’ current playoff run. Portis may not be putting up mind-boggling offensive stats, but he’s doing everything efficiently, shooting 50% from the field and 36.4% from 3PT, which is tied for 2nd best on the team in the playoffs.
We all know that Bobby can get it done on the offensive side of the ball. Hence the name Bobby Buckets. However, he’s also playing great defense. His Defensive Rating is at a career-best 101, tied for a team-best (more than 75 minutes played). Portis also has the best Defensive Box Plus/Minus he’s ever had in the playoffs or regular season at 1.5.
Bobby brings incredible energy
We all heard how hyped the crowd got for Bobby in game 2 of the Eastern Conference Finals. The energy and hustle he brings to the team are infectious. Unfortunately, I have been unable to attend any Bucks game this year, but I can feel the energy that Bobby adds through the television screen.
The Bucks wouldn’t be the same without Bobby. Without him on the court against the Nets, the energy seemed to lack at times, and fans were screaming for Portis to be put in. Unfortunately, that doesn’t happen for just any player. Portis has a player option for next year on his contract. I hope he declines so the Bucks can sign him long-term. Milwaukee loves Bobby and Bobby loves Milwaukee. It’s time to show him how much he means to the city.
