Tramon Williams has had a great career, especially with the Packers. He has made a Pro Bowl, helped win a Super Bowl, and is a good veteran leader. However, he is still a free agent and his future is in limbo. Many fans feel like the Packers should bring him back for at least one more year. Here are three reasons why that might not be a good idea.
#1- Age
Tramon Williams will be 37 this year after a long 13-year career. While he was ranked as the sixth best corner back in the league last year, it is hard to see how he can get any better as his body ages. Wide receivers are getting younger and faster. Williams will certainly have a harder time keeping up with them this year.
#2- Salary Cap
The Packers paid Tramon Williams $5 million in each of the past two seasons. While this was a very affordable contract, the Packers do not have much cap room to work with. In addition, they still need to be able to pay whatever players they draft. It’s possible that Williams would take less to play for the Packers, but just how much less? If Williams does play this season, it is likely he will seek the most lucrative contract possible. He has already won a Super Bowl; he has nothing left to prove.
#3- Just How Good Is He?
As mentioned earlier, Tramon Williams was ranked as the sixth best corner back in the league last season. This is an incredible accomplishment, especially during his age 36 season. However, NFL scouts must have seen some kind of decline on the horizon for Williams because he has not been signed by anyone yet. Even Jimmy Graham, who is widely believed to be far passed his prime, has found a new home already.
Conclusion
Tramon Williams has been a great player for the Green Bay Packers. However, the Packers need to get younger if they are going to remain competitive. Williams will be 37 this season and will not be getting any quicker. The Packers do not have much cap room to work with, even if Williams was willing to give them a discount. Finally, if Williams is really as good as the numbers say, why hasn’t he been scooped up by another team? There may be a decline on the horizon that the experts are seeing that the fans are not.
