Three Bold Predictions for Robert Tonyan in 2021

The Green Bay Packers had the highest scoring offense in the NFL last season.  One of the surprises on that offense was the emergence of Robert “Big Bob” Tonyan, who tied the Packers’ franchise record for touchdown receptions in a season among tight ends.  In an offseason full of uncertainties, one of the things the Packers did ensure is that their two top tight ends, Tonyan and Marcedes Lewis, would be back with team in 2021.  With the band back together (at least in the tight end room), we present our three bold predictions for the Packers’ tight ends in 2021.

Robert Tonyan Will Break His Touchdown Record

Robert Tonyan may have tied records in 2020, but look for him to break them in 2021.  According to multiple reports, Coach Matt LaFleur requested Tonyan to report to OTA’s because he wants him featured more in the offense this season:

LaFleur says he wants to feature Robert Tonyan in the offense more in 2021. Says Tonyan has improved more than anyone on the team since he became head coach in 2019.

Last season, Tonyan tied the Packers’ tight end record with 11 touchdown receptions. As a bigger factor in the offense, look for Tonyan to surpass those 11 touchdowns in 2021.  We predict he will have between 13-15 touchdowns this season.

Tonyan Will Break the Tight End Receptions Record

Jermichael Finley holds the Packers’ record for total receptions in a season by a tight end with 61.  Last season, Tonyan had 52 receptions.  As a bigger part of the offense, this number will certainly go up.  Even if he averages just one more reception per game than he did in 2020, he will end up with 68 receptions, which is more than enough to break Finley’s record.  However, we predict he will end up with about 65 receptions in 2021.

Tonyan Will Break the Tight End Receiving Yards Record

Carroll Dale hold the team record for receiving yards by a tight end with 876, set all the way back in 1966.  Tonyan had 52 receptions for 586 yards last season.  The Packers have a good core of wide recievers again this year, but Tonyan has established himself as one of the most reliable targets on the team.  Whereas receivers Allen Lazard and Marques Valdez-Scantling had drop percentages over 10% last season, Tonyan didn’t drop a single pass.  The recieving yards record could very well be within reach for him if he maintains his superb catch percentage and garners more throws his way.  We predict he will have roughly 900 yards receiving.
