The Purdue Boilermakers went to the National Championship Game a season ago and lost to the UCONN Huskies. Head coach Matt Painter has built a very successful Purdue program for a very long time. The Boilermakers went on the road on Tuesday night and lost to the Marquette Golden Eagles 76-58 on the road.
Purdue was the sixth-ranked team in the nation and Marquette was the 15th-ranked team in the nation entering the game. The Boilermakers are 4-1 this season in college basketball and the Golden Eagles are 5-0 this season in college basketball.
Purdue Boilermakers Head Coach Matt Painter Praises Marquette Golden Eagles Basketball Program After Latest Defeat
Boilermakers head coach Matt Painter had a lot to say after the game against the Marquette Golden Eagles. Purdue looked flat from the opening tipoff against Marquette. Painter said to the media about the program that head coach Shaka Smart runs over at Marquette:
“They’ve got a good program and I think it’s a good lesson for a lot players out there, to look at what Marquette’s done and look at there guys. All the guys I’ve mentioned from Joplin to Stevie Mitchell to Chase Ross to Kam. They have a program, even if you’re not the one or two options, stay at a program even if you don’t start. Look at that crowd you play in front of. Look at the atmosphere you have. Look at the atmosphere you have. You get a great education at Marquette. But you stay and battle through adversity, and you’re a team. That’s cool, right? That’s what it’s about. Marquette’s got something special.”
They only lost Tyler Kolek and Oso Ighodaro this past off-season. Marquette is led by Kam Jones this season and he has a chance to be the Big East Player of the Year when conference play begins.
Last Final Four Appearance Was In 2003
The Purdue Boilermakers and Matt Painter were able to get to a Final Four appearance last season. This season, Shaka Smart and the Marquette Golden Eagles have a chance to get to the Final Four this year if they play like this all season long.
Marquette is a very deep team. Outside of Kam Jones, they have Ben Gold, Chase Ross, and Stevie Mitchell. Marquette might be deeper than last season. Even though the Golden Eagles might be deeper this season, the Boilermakers are also a deep team and there is a chance they could meet again in the NCAA Tournament.
