In the 32 years of the Brett Favre-Aaron Rodgers era (1992-2022), the Green Bay Packers have made the playoffs in 22 of those 31 seasons. During that time, the team has played in 43 playoff games, second only to the New England Patriots with 49. The Pittsburgh Steelers are third with 38 playoff games since 1992.

Packers have missed the playoffs in back-to-back years only three times since 1992

But what about those seasons when the Packers missed the playoffs? For the record, the team has missed the playoffs in two consecutive years only three times in the last 32 seasons: 1999 and 2000, 2005 and 2006, and 2017 and 2018.

The year after the Green Bay Packers missed the playoffs in the Favre-Rodgers era

Let’s take a look at how the Green Bay Packers did the season after they missed the playoffs in the Favre-Rodgers era.

1992: Missed playoffs with a 9-7 record. In 1993 the team also went 9-7 but made the playoffs. They lost to Dallas in the Divisional Round after defeating the Lions in the Wild Card.

1999: Missed playoffs with an 8-8 record. In 2000, the team went 9-7, but missed the playoffs.

2000: Missed playoffs with a 9-7 record. In 2001, the team went 12-4 and made the playoffs. They lost to the St. Louis Rams in the Divisional Round after defeating the 49ers in the Wild Card.

2005: Missed playoffs with a 4-12 record. In 2006, they improved to 8-8 but missed the playoffs.

2006: Missed playoffs with an 8-8 record. In 2007, they improved to 13-3 and made the playoffs. They lost in the NFC Championship Game after defeating Seattle in the Divisional Round.

2008: Missed playoffs with a 6-10 record. In 2009, they improved to 11-5 and made the playoffs. They lost to Arizona in the Wild Card.

2017: Missed playoffs with a 7-9 record. In 2018, their record dropped to 6-9-1 and they missed the playoffs.

2018: Missed the playoffs with a 6-9-1 record. In 2019, they improved to 13-3 and made the playoffs. They lost to the 49ers in the NFC Championship Game after defeating Seattle in the Divisional Round.

2022: Missed the playoffs with an 8-9 record. In 2023, ????????

So, what, if anything, did we learn?

    • In those eight seasons since 1992 when the Packers did not make the playoffs, the team improved their record six of the eight following seasons. Their record was the same the next year once, and the team saw their record get worse the following season also once.
    • In five of those eight seasons, the Packers returned to the playoffs the following season.
    • In four of those eight seasons, the Packers won at least one playoff game the following season.
