What do you remember about former Brewers’ pitcher Tyler Cravy?
Knowledgeable Brew Crew fans may remember Cravy as a 17th round selection in the 2009 MLB draft. They may remember him as a member of the Brewers’ major league team in 2015 and 2016, pitching in 34 games those two seasons with 14 starts. Cravy’s last game in the majors was on October 2, 2016.
But if you dig a little deeper into Tyler Cravy’s MLB resume, you will find his career included two stats that were very interesting. In fact, those two stats linked together give Cravy one of the most unique stat lines in baseball history.
Cravy’s only career hit was a home run
The first stat: Cravy was one of a handful of players to have only one career hit in the majors… a home run.
On August 27, 2016, Cravy collected his one and only MLB hit when he led off the bottom of the fourth in a game versus the Pittsburgh Pirates with a solo HR. He had come in the game in relief of Jimmy Nelson in the top of the fourth. The Brewers lost that game 9-6.
Cravy’s career batting line included that one hit (HR) in 12 at-bats.
Cravy is one of 28 players who have one MLB hit, a home run. Two of those 28 occurred this past season so those players may get the opportunity for more at-bats and potentially more hits. Another happened in 2021. The other 25 players listed have not played in the majors since 2019 and will not likely see their batting career stats change.
Cravy did not win a game in the majors
The second stat: Cravy is one of eight pitchers who never won a game in the majors and lost eight or more games.
Cravy was 0-8 in 2015 with the Brewers making 14 appearances, seven as a starter. The following season he went 0-1 in 20 games including two starts.
Here are the MLB pitchers (since 1901) who had the most losses without a win in their career. Also noted are the MLB years for each player.
Terry Felton 0-16 (1979-82)
Steve Gerkin 0-12 (1945)
Tyler Cravy 0-9 (2015-16)
Scott Ruffcorn 0-8 (1993-97)
Archie Reynolds 0-8 (1968-72)
Lazaro Medino 0-8 (1944-45)
Paul Brown 0-8 (1961-68)
Ed Albasta 0-8 (1941-46)
To be mentioned in one of these two unique stats would be enough. But for Tyler Cravy, he is that rare player who’s only hit in the majors was a home run, and he never won a game (but lost nine) in his pitching career. Two stats you wouldn’t figure would go together.
But for Tyler Cravy, those two stats will likely define his short career in the majors with the Brewers.
