The National Football League just wrapped up its 2022/2023 season with Super Bowl LVII. The Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Philadelphia Eagles in a comeback win 38-35. With the offseason starting, Green Bay Packers fans have many questions about if quarterback Aaron Rodgers will be back. Does he retire? Does he get traded? Questions are not only surrounding Rodgers, but they are also circling backup quarterback Jordan Love. If Rodgers is back what is Love’s reaction? If Rodgers isn’t in Green Bay at the start of the 2023/2024 season, is Love the guy? With a lot of questions focused around the Green Bay Packers, the front office might have dug themselves into a hole with there 4 time MVP and his possible replacement.
Flashback to When the Green Bay Packers Drafted Jordan Love
In 2020 the Green Bay Packers had the 30th Overall pick. Many thought they would draft a weapon for Aaron Rodgers and the Packer’s offense. The Packers traded up in the draft to the 26th overall pick to draft Utah State quarterback Jordan Love, and at the time, Rodgers had 4 years left in his contract. It was a massive shock not only to the Packers fanbase but to the NFL and Media. Reporters instantly started to compare the situation to the 2005 NFL Draft when the Packers picked Aaron Rodgers in the first round behind fan favorite, Brett Favre.
As the 2020 offseason continued and the season began, rumors spread about how Rodgers felt about the situation. Rodgers proceeds to go on to have two back-to-back MVP seasons in 2020 and 2021, which made Packer fans realize that he is still playing at a very high level.
Aaron Rodgers Signed a Monster Contract
Ahead of the 2022 season, Rodgers signed a three-year 150.815 million dollar contract extension, meaning he could be under contract until 2026 (with two option years). Some Packer fans were happy while many others were left confused since Jordan Love is still sitting on the bench. Even more rumors have been spiraling about Love saying he will request a trade if Rodgers is the starting quarterback in 2023. The Packer’s front office has said they believe Love is ready to play, but the front office also stated that they committed to Rodgers when they extended his contract.
As of right now, we do not know if Rodgers will retire or want to keep playing. Trade rumors have been around since Rodgers and Randall Cobb walked off the field together in a loss to the Detroit Lions in Week 18. The Packers might have dug themselves into a major hole in the quarterback position. This extension seems to have Green Bay handcuffed to Rodgers. With the salary cap hit and dead cap money- what is the right call? Do they keep committing to an aging MVP quarterback, or start a new era in Green Bay? This could be a very long off-season for Green Bay Packers fans.
