A Super Bowl-winning coach recently said they’re not worried about Jordan Love’s lack of starts ahead of the 2023 season. Love will finally get the chance to be the full-time starter for the Green Bay Packers in his fourth NFL season.
If this were college, Love would be a senior before getting his first full-time starting gig with the Packers. Love started 32 games in three seasons at Utah State. The former first-round pick has had to suffer waiting on the sidelines for an NFL legend to get out of his way.
Super Bowl-winning coach talks about Jordan Love
Packers quarterback coach Tom Clements has seen this type of transition before–with Aaron Rodgers. He was with the Packers as their quarterbacks coach for the 2006-2011 seasons. Clements saw Rodgers sit behind Brett Favre through the 2007 season. He helped coach Rodgers to his only Super Bowl championship in Green Bay.
According to a statement on the Packers website, Clements said recently he sees Love making the same progress Rodgers made as a backup to Favre:
“We didn’t know [Rodgers] was going to be a Hall of Famer and have the career he had, but we knew he was good,” said Clements of Rodgers. “And the same thing (with Love). We’ve watched Jordan in the preseason, in practices, and then he got an opportunity to have a little extended playing time against Philadelphia and he did some very good things. So, I’m sure that helped his confidence, helps the confidence of the guys around him and he just needs to build on that.”
Rodgers turned out alright for the Packers
Rodgers turned out to be everything the Packers staff could have dreamed he’d be after Favre was traded to the New York Jets. Rodgers showed flashes of brilliance during the 2007 season when he came in for Favre against the Dallas Cowboys. But even the Packers coaches were unsure of Rodgers’ potential before 2008 season. They took two quarterbacks in the 2008 NFL Draft.

Love is an unknown for the Packers coaching staff this season. That could mean Love winds up being a failure this season. However, Love could wind up being an elite quarterback for the team in the next decade. More than likely, he’ll fall somewhere in between. After three seasons, he deserves to have that chance, at least.
