Don’t be surprised if freshmen Damarius Owens or Royce Parham reject offer from other more prominent schools because according to Stevie Mitchell, leaving the Marquette Golden Eagles is leaving your home to be taken care of by another.

Lori Nickel of Milwaukee Journal Sentinel traced how the Golden Eagles became a program that is not welcoming to transfers this 2024, in a good way.
In her article, she said that Marquette is the only basketball program that did not accept transferees from the transfer portal in this ongoing season.
This is because players would rather stay with the team and doing otherwise, according to Mitchell is like you consciously leaving your family for another.

“Or like, ‘I want to be put up for adoption,’” Mitchell said when Nickel suggested that it will be like asking for divorce.
“I mean, it’s the family we built. It wouldn’t even feel in the realm of rightness to do such a thing, because it’s like, there’s literally no place I’d rather be.”
The man behind this kind of feeling is head coach Shaka Smart.
Shaka Smart’s relationship with Stevie Mitchell
Lori Nickel’s article showed comprehensively how the players love being Marquette. Whether the star player like Kam Jones, or the freshmen who from time to time get the spotlight because of the opportunities given to them.
For this season, it is Mitchell who is making the most out of the opportunity.
The senior guard is making a leap and it is all because of the trust given to him by his coach.
Mitchell received praise from Smart two weeks ago when he stepped up against Butler Bulldogs due to the foul trouble that Jones dealt with.

The best thing he did was that he started ramping up aggressiveness late in first half. You could see that he got his hands on a couple of balls. So he set a tone for the team. That ‘hey we are not going out like this…’ we have to be better. He was very outspoken in the locker room at halftime.
But it is awesome seeing him score like we know that he can….it is interesting…some of the teams have almost disrespected him…by staying off him or by putting a big guy on him…and he can score.
